Today we have experienced flooding on the ground floor of Te Kāhui Auaha campus. It is fully closed Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th April. Please stay connected to your tutors for updates, and for work that you are able to do remotely check out Moodle. A further update about reopening will be shared Wednesday. All other campuses remain open as usual.

Iwi partnerships

Whitireia and WelTec are dedicated to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand. Our Iwi partnerships are a big part of our identity.

Ngāti Toa Rangatira

Whitireia has a long relationship with Ngāti Toa Rangatira that reaches back to the very beginning of the institution. Ngāti Toa Rangatira are central to the introduction of manuhiri to Whitireia, officiating at pōwhiri for new students and welcoming new staff at Takapūwāhia Marae.

Ngāti Toa Rangatira have been instrumental in facilitating the development of new programmes with a particular focus on impacting the local community. In 2008, Ngāti Toa Rangatira were strong advocates for the development of the Bachelor of Nursing Māori, motivated by a desire to provide the best and most effective health care for their people and to see Māori students graduating and succeeding in the industry.

Te Āti Awa

Te Whare Wānanga o te Awakairangi – Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) has a long-standing relationship with Te Āti Awa.

WelTec strongly supports the vision of Te Āti Awa for Māori to achieve their career goals.

The Tamaiti Whangai team, who work to ensure the success of ākonga Māori, was based off the model of support designed by Te Ati Awa. Our ākonga Māori mentors support students in their study or training, as well as helping with any other issues.

In 2008, WelTec and Te Āti Awa signed a memorandum of understanding, a partnership agreement that is renewed every two years. WelTec also has an agreement with Waiwhetu Marae, where we hold our Māori student orientation.

Our Tohu

The concepts of Kotahitanga (togetherness, unity and collective action lifting each other up, identifying as one) and Poutama (the pursuit of knowledge) guided the design of the two tohu - Ākonga (left) and Kaitiakatanga (right) - crafted by Manukorihi Winiata (Ngāti Raukawa, Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) for Whitireia and WelTec.
