New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3)

Discover the basics of automotive engineering. Learn how to use tools to complete basic engineering tasks, perform minor servicing tasks on engines and driveline systems and apply fundamental knowledge by completing tasks on automotive systems including electrical. This programme will set you up to start an automotive engineering apprenticeship.

What you will learn

Develop foundation skills in engine repair and performance, servicing, electrics as well as basic engineering tasks and welding. Work on light and diesel vehicles. Apply your skills with work experience. Progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Managed Apprenticeship) Level 4.

  • Engine components, repair and performance
  • Electrical and electronic operations and control
  • Battery testing, wire repairs and lighting systems
  • Diesel and light vehicle introduction
  • Basic servicing of motor vehicles, including brakes, steering and suspension
  • Carry out basic engineering tasks and welding
  • Identify and control automotive workshop hazards

Career options

To be a certified mechanic, you need to complete the Level 4 Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering (offered by WelTec).

Entry requirements

Under 20 years

10 NCEA Level 1 numeracy credits and 10 NCEA Level 1 literacy credits - or equivalent knowledge and skills. A pre-entry interview may be required.

20+ years

If you’re 20 years or over, you may qualify for special admission on this programme. Contact us if you don’t meet the Under 20 entry requirements

Students must complete the Level 4 programme to be a certified automotive mechanic.
