Whitireia and WelTec have been strategic partners since 2012, delivering a range of career choices and vast opportunities for staff, faculty, and students. Now we’re one of New Zealand’s most impressive, globally competitive tertiary institutions.
Established in 1986, Whitireia is a wholly-owned Crown entity subsidiary company of Te Pūkenga, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Every year we train over 4,900 students who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Porirua, Wellington, and Auckland.
We offer a range of programmes of study at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and Master’s levels. Our programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications. Our NZQA Highly Confident rating for educational performance and capability in self-assessment makes Whitireia a Category 1 institution.
Whitireia is named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain) of Titahi Bay – the mountain that Ngāti Toa identifies with, the highest mountain in their rohe.
The Wellington Institute of Technology is a tertiary institution that trains around 6,100 students every year. We offer a range of industry-led qualifications from trades through to degrees and postgraduate programmes that are future-focused, developed alongside industry and provide ākonga with practical skills so you can pursue your career goals. NZQA's latest review has given WelTec a positive rating.
WelTec is one of New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions and the second-oldest in Wellington. We’ve been helping people find their vocation since 1904, and in 2020 WelTec became a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga.

We were one of the first ITPs to navigate the new evaluation process last year. It is heartening to see the dedication and innovation of our kaimahi shine through in the report, especially as the evaluation took place as we were responding to the challenges of Covid-19. The report is important as it enables understanding as to why the Targeted Evaluation is important, and how it is at the heart of what we do in ensuring quality vocational education for ākonga in Wellington and the wider region. The report is available on the NZQA website.
