Meet Master of IT graduate, Helena Liu

Published on

In 2020, Helena and her family made the move to Wellington from Changchun City, China. In 2023, Helena celebrated completing a Master of Information Technology after a year and a half of full-time study.

Helena’s final paper, “A Systematic Literature Review on the Selenium-based Test Automation Framework (TAF) for Web Applications”, was so highly applauded by her tutors that it was used as an example for other students.

Helena loved the friendly culture at Whitireia and is grateful for her supportive tutors. The COVID-19 lockdowns were a challenge, but Helena’s tutors were able to be flexible. “Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we had regular online meetings”

“My supervisor was incredibly friendly and patient throughout my studies, especially during the completion of my final paper, helping me overcome any obstacles and motivating me to find innovative solutions.

I am truly grateful for their dedication and hard work, as it has greatly benefited me and my future.”

When Helena first moved, she completed the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic), which she says helped her immensely prior to starting the Master's programme.

In Changhun City, Helena worked at a local university. She heard about Whitireia and WelTec through an agent in China, but it was only after she checked it out online that she decided it was the place for her. Seeing Wellington described as New Zealand's “cool little capital” helped cement the decision for her and her family.

With two kids enjoying school and her husband working as a builder, Helena’s family plans to stay in New Zealand. They enjoy the milder climate here compared to Changhun City, which can get down to temperatures of –25 celsius.

Helena’s dream is to be a software developer. She is excited to take the next step in her journey, in New Zealand’s technology sector.
